Things to Think About: Not taking risk is the riskiest thing you can do today

Things to Think About

By Pepper de Callier

“Not taking risk is the riskiest thing you can do today.” Robert Brunner

In the context of the 21st century, taking risk takes on a whole new meaning.  It is no longer possible to have, what we thought in the 20th century was, “complete information” before we make a decision.  Things are happening too fast and there too many moving parts that can, and will, affect any given situation.  Someone recently said that the 21st century was all about “getting comfortable, feeling uncomfortable”.  In other words, we increasingly will be in situations where we will have to decide based on available data.  Some leaders refer to this as being able to function in an environment of ambiguity.  This is not about guessing what to do—far from it.  This is about honing your decision-making skills.  It won’t happen overnight.  It’s an organic, incremental process, that takes practice, and that word risk is how one gets practice.  To leaders and Boards of Directors, this is a call for creating a more mistake-tolerant environment and to all others, it’s a call to adapt to the 21st century and getting comfortable feeling uncomfortable.

Good luck on your journey.

Till next time…
