Things to Think About: The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good

Things to Think About

By Pepper de Callier

"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good." Samuel Johnson

Many years ago, when I was training consultants how to interview and evaluate senior executives, I would encourage them to get the person they were evaluating “out of context”.  In other words, get them out of an interview, or business environment and see how they act.  When we are being interviewed and evaluated, everything we say and do is in that context—pretty simple.  But, when we get  people out-of-context, for example, out to an informal lunch, or riding with them in a car when they are driving, or just taking a walk somewhere, we can begin to see more about them.  How someone treats a waiter in a restaurant, for example, or how they treat other motorists, or how they interact with other pedestrians or vendors, gives one a window into their real character.  It may not work 100% of the time, but over the years, I have found this to be very effective, especially if I’m a passenger in a car they are driving.

Good luck on your journey.

Till next time…
